Devotion: Helping For Our Lord

Matthew 6:1-4

Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

It feels good when we do good for others! That is why it is so important to be mindful of our motivations. Are you helping someone in need to glorify our Lord? Or are you helping someone for your own benefit, for praise? The enemy is sly. He can twist almost anything against our Lord. Even things like giving to others! Be careful not to let him lead you down the path of bragging and boasting.

My challenge for you today is to do as many kind things as you can! It can be anything little like saying hello to a stranger or holding the door; or it can be more extravagant, like taking a meal to a family who can use it! Anything to help someone and to be kind. At the end of the day, don’t talk about it. Don’t post on social media about it. Don’t expect anything in return. Do it for the glory of the One who deserves all of the praise!

“Father, help me today to see those who are in need. Give me the wisdom Lord to know how I can help make their day brighter. Give me a servants heart to work for your kingdom and for your glory. Help me to keep thoughts of righteousness and boasting far away from my mind. Show me Your will Father. Thank You. In your precious name, Amen.”

  1. Thank you for this. Pride and self-righteousness can be very sneaky; this is a reminder and a prayer that I needed today.
