Devotion: Our Plans vs. God’s Plans

Most of our lives are made up of schedules. We plan out our days, we plan out our finances, and job interviews often have the same question: “What does your 5-year plan look like?” Plans are not necessarily bad; they can help us stay organized and help us to be prepared. However, when we hold on to our plans too tightly, that’s where the problems begin.

God tells us in Jeremiah 29:11, ““For I know the plans for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”” As Christians we know our futures hold plans of eternity, but we know God has plans for each of us here on Earth as well!

Our lives are like a great-big painting. We can only see a few brush strokes, try as we might to figure out what the painting is, we cannot know for sure. We cannot see the big picture. God can not only see the whole picture, but He painted it himself.

When the painting isn’t what we expected that can be difficult! Especially if we are so sure of it. Keep in mind that God does have a plan for you, He does know what is best for you. Don’t hold on so tightly to your plans that you miss (or ignore) what God has planned for you.

My challenge for you today is to loosen your grip on the plans you have for your life. Ask God for help!

“Lord, I know you have plans for me; plans that are far greater than my own! Help me to really listen when you are sharing your will for my life and to let go of some of my own plans. Thank you for painting my picture Father! Amen”
