Standing by Our Lord or Just Standing by?

Mary Magdalene can teach us a lot about standing by Jesus and our faith! In the hardest time she stood by Him. Mary was right there at the crucifixion. When most others fled out of fear, Mary was there to support her God. There is no question of how Mary Magdalene would have answered if her faith was challenged. Her faith was challenged; she stayed by her Lord.

Although our circumstances are quite a bit different from hers, we can still practice today what Mary Magdalene taught us. How often is our faith as Christians questioned? Especially as Christian women? How do we respond? I know when I am in a tough situation surrounded by non-believers, many times I will just not speak up. I am too worried I will offend someone, or make someone not like me that I act as if my faith doesn’t exist. This is not how Jesus would want me to respond.

There are countless verses in the Bible about standing by and sharing our faith. Let’s look at a few.

1 Peter 3:15, “But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,”
Romans 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.”
Matthew 5:14-15, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.”

So, How does God want us to respond?

  1. He does not want us to hide our faith, to hide the Holy Spirit within us! Don’t be ashamed of the gospel.

  2. He wants us to act in a way that makes non-believers wonder and question what we have that is so special. We are called to love, speak, and act as Christ did.

  3. When our faith is questioned God wants us to stand by our Lord, defend our Lord, and share our Lord with gentleness and respect.

These are by no means easy tasks, after all we cannot be perfect as Jesus was. However, we can tell others of his perfection!

I think the best way to remember these things is with a song most of us grew up with. This Little Light of Mine! Go ahead, you can sing it if you want to!

“…This little light of mine,
I’m gonna let it shine…
Hide it under a bushel? No!
I’m gonna let it shine…”

We each have a light given to us by the Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ! We can learn from Mary Magdalene by not hiding our Lord, but by staying by Him in all we do! Ladies, instead of hiding our light to just stand by, let’s use our lights to shine hope onto others!

God Bless and Happy Thursday!
